Posted by

OutLawed India is an organisation that bolsters citizen engagement with law through grass-roots level legal education. In 2020, OutLawed India conducted Legal Awareness Workshops for 2500+ people across the country.

Previously, they have worked with organisations like Trilegal, Center for Internet and Society, Project 39A to conduct sessions on pertinent legal issues. We’ve also worked with NGOs like Teach for India, Super School India, and Indus Action to facilitate Legal Awareness Workshops.

About the Project on Sexual Harassment Protocol in Schools

OutLawed India wishes to conduct research on sexual harassment inquiry frameworks in schools all over India. The recent incidents of sexual harassment in schools in Tamil Nadu reveals the need to devise a comprehensive framework of addressing sexual harassment internally, as well as reporting the same to the police.

We first wish to understand how schools already deal with complaints of sexual harassment, whether there are internal committees, what are the interim measures taken, and whether there is reporting of such incidents to the police, in compliance with POCSO. As a more long-term plan, we also wish to work with NGOs and civil society organizations to come up with a set of draft guidelines which could be adopted by schools, to deal with such incidents.

What will the Volunteers do?

OutLawed is calling for volunteers to collect, compile and analyse data relating to the sexual harassment protocols in schools all over India.

  • Their primary role would involve contacting various schools and circulating survey forms to collect such data.
  • The survey form has already been prepared, and the volunteers would need to ensure that as many schools as possible give data on the same. The data can also be collected by circulating forms among high school students or recent graduates of such schools, to collect the requisite information.
  • OutLawed will guide the volunteers throughout this process, and also train them on how to undertake data analysis once the information has been collected.

OutLawed India does believe that such research could be very beneficial in outlining the system that schools rely on in cases of sexual harassment!

Benefit to Volunteers

  • Volunteers will receive a certificate of participation from OutLawed.
  • They will be trained on how to manage data and analyse the same.
  • Finally, and most importantly, they will be able to contribute to a relevant and contemporary issue and be involved in the process to make schools safer for students.

This is an opportunity to be an active member of the civil society and contribute to accountable and safer institutions.
