About
The U.S. Consulate General Chennai in collaboration with Loyola College, Chennai is planning “A U.S. – India Comparative Constitutional Law Debate” scheduled to culminate with a final debate competition in Chennai on September 14, 2019.
Engaging students across South India, this project will showcase the Constitutions of the United States and India, underscoring democratic guarantees of a citizen’s right to life, free, property, and speech. The debate will deliberate on contemporary issues in the context of the U.S. and Indian Constitutional laws.
Aim of the project
The aim of the project is to enable the participants to better understand and appreciate the nuances of the U.S. and Indian Constitutions. The project involves the following four highly recognized law institutions in South India. Four regional debates will be conducted in the following cities, Bengaluru (Karnataka), Kochi (Kerala), Trichy (South Tamil Nadu), and Chennai (Chennai and Puducherry) to maximize the geographic reach of the selection process.

FINAL DEBATE |
The top two winners (16 participants) from the above four centres will participate in the final debate competition.
A workshop on U.S. Constitution by Professor Mark Tushnet, Harvard Law School and on the Indian Constitution by Dr. Abhinav Chandrachud, Attorney, High Court of Mumbai will precede the final debates. The final debate will be followed by a grand award ceremony and a networking reception on September 14, 2019.
Prizes
We are also excited to inform that the winner of the debate gets a MacbookPro as the first prize loaded with SCC online global + HeinOnline along with a trophy and certificate.

To aid the participant’s preparation, YouTube videos will be made available on the following topics:
- History of the U.S. Constitution
- First Amendment
- Judicial Review/Due Process
In addition, a list of online materials, books and DVDs available at the American Center, Chennai and select law review materials will
be provided to the participant.
