SASFL-SPIL Colloquium on “Why is India Poor”

About the Organizer & Event

South Asia Students for Liberty hosted by Students for Promotion of International Law (SPIL), Mumbai is organising a Colloquium at Government Law College, Mumbai.

They say if there are 10 people in the room, there will be 11 opinions on India’s poverty. Popular notions such as over-population, resource scarcity, lack of education, culture etc are cited as reasons that keep millions of Indians in poverty.

However, it is important to comprehend the nature of poverty and address it from an economic perspective without giving in to these popular notions. It is only when we address the issue from an economic and rational perspective; we arrive at observations entirely different from the common myths about poverty.

Why is India Poor? is an engaging reader developed by the Centre for Civil Society and Friedrich Naumann Foundation.

The colloquium on this topic will raise questions like:  Is over-population triggering poverty? Are our cultural attitudes reasons for our backwardness? What explains the widespread poverty in our country?  Is economic freedom a boon or a bane?

About SFL Colloquium

How often have you watched a debate and felt, ‘both sides have some valid points if only they stopped trying to prove each other wrong and tried to listen’? The nature of a debate is competitive and oppositional with both sides trying to prove each other wrong.

An SFL Colloquium is a collaborative, cooperative dialogue in which multiple sides work toward a shared understanding. Dialogue creates an open-minded attitude; openness to being wrong and an openness to change while respecting other participants.
