Project 39A draws inspiration from Article 39-A in the Indian Constitution on equal justice and signals the broadening of our work on the criminal justice system in India. We undertake litigation, research and outreach relating to forensics, torture, legal aid, mental health and criminal justice, and death penalty.

The Programme is an intervention to provide legal assistance to undertrial prisoners in Yerwada and Nagpur Central Prison in collaboration with the District Legal Services Authorities (DLSA) and the Government of Maharashtra. The Programme has the following objectives:
A. Providing quality legal representation to undertrial prisoners and supporting the inmates through the legal proceedings.
B. Providing support to DLSAs and Taluka Legal Services Committees (TLSCs) and strengthening mechanisms for providing free legal aid to persons in custody.
C. Training, mentoring and building capacities of young professionals to improve the quality of socio-legal services within the criminal justice system.

Roles

  • The intern will assist with archival, doctrinal, comparative, and quantitative research focused on Project 39A’s work on legal aid.
  • The intern will assist in writing research reports and journal articles dealing with contemporary issues in legal aid and criminal law in India.
  • The intern will also have the opportunity to develop innovative strategies with the communications team for the dissemination and outreach of our work.

Minimum Qualification

II year students of an integrated 5-year LL.B. programme or II/III-year students of a 3 year LL.B. programme during the academic year 2022-2023.

Stipend

The intern will be paid a stipend as per the standard of Project 39A.

C. Writing Sample of not more than 2000 words (exclusive of footnotes) on any issues related to the criminal justice system.
