Home Department is responsible for the maintenance of law and order and protection of life and property of the citizens. The major functions of the Home Department are: Prevention and control of Crime, Administration of Justice System, Maintenance of Law and Order, Administration of Police Department and Civil Armed Battalions, Administration of Vigilance, Home Guards and Civil Defense, Fire Services, Forensic Science Laboratory and Prison Departments, Establishment of Lokayukta and Human Rights Commission, Grant of Arms Licenses and matters related to arms dealer licenses, Grant of permits for plying vehicles on sealed/restricted routes in Shimla Town and, Issues related to Visa, Inner-line permits, NORI, Citizenship etc.

- Existing Posts: UR=03, SC=02, ST=01 & OBC=01 and
- Anticipated Posts: UR=04, SC of H.P.=01, ST of H.P.=02 & OBC=03
- Pay Scale: Level-J-1 (₹77840 – 136520)
- Eligibility:
- i. A candidate must be a holder of degree in law as recognized by the Bar Council of India.
- ii. A Candidate must be a citizen of India.
- Age Limit: A candidate must have attained the age of 22 years but must not be more than 35 years of age as on the last date prescribed for submit of Online Recruitment Applications (The upper age limit is relaxable by 03 years for SC, ST & OBC Category candidates of H.P).
- Centre for examination: The Preliminary Examination will be held at Shimla, Mandi, Kangra at Dharamahsla
- Payment Mode of Examination Fee: Online mode (Candidates should note that payment of fee should be made only through the modes prescribed above. Payment of fee through any other mode is neither valid nor acceptable. Applications submitted without the prescribed fee/modes shall be summarily rejected).

Servicemen of H.P. relieve from Defence Services on their own request before completion of normal tenure, General Wards of Ex. Servicemen of H.P. i.e. Dependent Sons/Daughters of Ex.SM of H.P.}: ₹400/-

- S C of H.P./ST of H.P./ OBC of H.P./EWS(covered under BPL)/(including SC/ST/OBC Ex. Servicemen of H.P. relieved from Defence Services on their own requests before completion of normal tenure and SC/ST/OBC Wards of Ex. Servicemen of H.P. i.e. Dependent Sons/Daughters of Ex. - E x . Servicemen of H.P.(Ex. Servicemen, who are relieved from Defence Servicesafter completion of normal tenure)/ Blind/Visually Impaired candidates of H.P./ Female candidates. No Fees applicable.
Note-I: Female candidates shall be exempted from the examination fee in accordance with the instructions of the Government (in the Department of Personnel) issued vide letter No. Per(AP-B)B(15)-13/2019 dated 01-01-2020.
Note-II: The candidates belonging to Unreserved BPL of H.P. category who intend to apply under EWS (BPL) of H.P. Category, will be entitled for fee concession i.e. 1/4th of the fee prescribed for unreserved category candidates. Rest of the EWS candidates, who are not falling within BPL of H.P. category, shall have to pay fee as applicable for unreserved category. Therefore, EWS category is further categorized into two sub categories i.e. EWS- BPL of H.P. and EWS of H.P. for the purpose of examination fee.
Note-III: The candidates who belong to any of the reserved category and there is no post reserved for such category but the candidates claiming fee concession available to them shall have to upload the category certificate in support of their claim.
