Introduction:

We are organizing the world’s first and only moot court competition, exclusively dealing on Business and Human Rights. The Business and Human Rights Moot Court Competition is being organised by NILS in association with Middlesex University and will take place in London from February 8 – 11, 2018.

The case-study of the moot court competition is being led by Mr Robert Thompson (Former Partner and Head (Environmental Law Practice), Dewey & Leboueuf LLP; Ms Rae Lindsay (Partner, Clifford Chance and Head (International Law Practice) and Mr Anthony Winer (Professor, Mitchell Hamline School of Law).

We have also received inputs from several leading Business and Human Rights experts, including, Michael Santoro, Adam Smith-Anthony, Barnali Choudhury, Sarah Macrory and Angela Evans.

What is Business & Human Rights:

International human rights standards have traditionally been the responsibility of governments, aimed at regulating relations between the State and individuals and groups.

But with the increased role of corporate actors, nationally and internationally, the issue of business’ impact on the enjoyment of human rights has been placed on the agenda of the United Nations.

Over the past decade, the United Nations human rights machinery has been considering the scope of business’ human rights responsibilities and exploring ways for corporate actors to be accountable for the impact of their activities on human rights.

As a result of this process, there is now greater clarity about the respective roles and responsibilities of governments and business with regard to protection and respect for human rights.
