Artificial intelligence (AI) is a wide-ranging branch of computer science concerned with building smart machines capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. Artificial intelligence allows machines to model, or even improves upon, the capabilities of the human mind. From the development of self-driving cars to the proliferation of generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, AI is increasingly becoming part of everyday life — and an area where every organization is investing in. Artificial intelligence has made its way into different fields like health care, education, business, legal services, finance, security, banking and transportation etc. Indeed, advances in AI techniques have not only helped fuel an explosion in efficiency, but opened the doors to entirely new business opportunities for some larger enterprises.
The ethical and legal complexities surrounding AI are profound, reflecting the rapid evolution of technology and its pervasive influence on society. Striking the right balance between innovation and ethical considerations is crucial to harness the full potential of AI while mitigating potential harms. Policymakers and stakeholders must collaborate to develop robust and adaptable regulatory frameworks that promote responsible AI development and deployment, ensuring that AI serves humanity’s best interests while upholding core values of ethics, fairness, and accountability.
