About Acculegal:
Acculegal is a small legal firm under Mr. K.M Basavaraj in Bangalore that takes not more than three to four interns. Sir deals with both corporate and litigation matters, that makes it easier for us to witness the two dimensions of law in just one place. Many students from the NLUs, Christ University, BILS, DU etc have interned at Acculegal from all the years and it’s one of the best places to intern for freshers. The process to secure an internship here starts with sending your resume to acculegalservices@gmail.com
The first day of internship:
The first day of every person is conventionally filled with nervousness and anxiety and it was no different for me. What was different was the environment in there, that changed my nervousness into exhilaration and I was all geared up for the next 21 days. On the first day, the first few hours was just an introductory session, and then I was given two case files of around 700 pages and was told to make a timeline of events in accordance with the files by the next 10 days. I thought it was a slim chance for me to actually do this in 10 days; however, I am glad I did it 4 days prior the deadline.
Main tasks during the internship:
Since I was just a pass out from the first year where the only law subject I had was Law of Torts, I wasn’t exactly given nerve-wracking pressurizing tasks, however, sir made sure that I learned something new every day. I had my first assigned task of reading the two case files to make a timeline. I was taken to the courts to witness proceedings of Divorce, evidence, issues, fraud etc that multiplied my interest towards my internship. I even got a chance to witness Arbitration and Mediation that not very easily a fresher gets to witness in detail. I was given the task of collecting the dates of case hearing from the court without any assistance and it was fun to wander in the court all clueless but later getting your work done with no help. Summarizing and analyzing the Supreme Court judgments was a tough task but it was fun and very serendipitous. Research is an integral part of any work, hence I had tons of research too. I got to read some divorce petitions, petitions of fraud, that was an eye opener and yet captivating.
Work Environment:
It was so friendly that it actually did not feel like I was an intern over there. Sir is very calm and peaceful and interactions with him were always fun. Short trips to the best restaurants in Bangalore were made almost every day as a token of break from work. With no or minimal restrictions, one can get the best out of it and at Acculegal, this is what made my first intern a fruitful and a memorable one.
Stipend:
Getting exposed to the legal field in a way that I got exposed to, with the vast knowledge that came along with it was my stipend. However, YES, I did get a stipend in the form of cheque at the end of three weeks that I had been there. Stipend’s generally given based on the intern’s contribution in his/her tenure of the internship. Along with it, interns aren’t allowed to pay for their lunch at Acculegal, so it’s basically free food that they get till they leave. (Yes, that’s an add-on to the experience here)
Anything else I’d like to tell:
There were times when I felt like interning under an NGO as that would have me deal with less detailed legal matters but I am so glad I didn’t do that. I don’t think I would be able to learn so much in just a span of three weeks had I actually made a shift from Acculegal.. There are times when all of us want an easier task to we get done with quickly, to stay away from the pressure that comes with tough tasks (Human nature). However, the best experiences and lessons come from the most challenging tasks and this is how we escalate as a person. Challenges are just intimidating till we take it. The minute we procure it, it’s just a mere medium of experience which is worth it.
