About the GMU Maritime Labour Law Academy (GMLLA)

Maritime workers perform an admirable service to humanity by helping move ships and a variety of cargo from one port to the other. Seafarers have to face numerous challenges working on long-term contracts, at sea, and far away from home. These include issues related to repatriation, abandonment, non-payment of wages, etc. Mindful of problems faced by seafarers in international waters, some forward-looking developments have taken place in international law. Today there are numerous Conventions and recommendations on working conditions in the maritime transport sector. The purpose of these is to achieve decent working conditions for seafarers and to secure economic interests through fair competition for quality ship owners.

Maritime Labour Law Academy aims to generate awareness about the current legal regime related to Maritime Labour Law. A wide range of topics, including recruitment, employment contracts, issues related to seafarer abandonment, will be discussed during the event. Sessions will be taken by some of the leading Maritime Law experts from both India and abroad.

GMU Centre for Research on Maritime Labour Law successfully organised the first Edition of the Event in 2020. Encouraged by the overwhelming success of the first editions, Centre is pleased to present before you the 2nd Edition of GMU Maritime Labour Law Academy. The 2nd Edition is scheduled to be organized virtually from 22 – 27 November 2021.
