This session will provide you with an overview of the work that Ashurst’s Intellectual Property and Competition Law teams conduct. This session will introduce you to the principles of patents and copyright in the context of a business joint venture before focusing on a specific question that arises frequently in the real world: who owns the intellectual property created when partners collaborate to create new technology?
You’ll also learn about competition law and the concept of the UK Competition and Markets Authority conducting an unannounced dawn raid (CMA). It focuses on search warrants, shadowing CMA investigators during a raid, and privilege arguments that the client may have in respect to the materials under examination by the CMA.

The Internship’s Main Purpose
- Learning Areas in Intellectual Property and Competition Law
- Planning & Preparation for Research: Prepare a study plan for a specific legal issue involving a joint venture.
- Client communication of study findings: Identify the client’s most important business considerations in a difficult joint venture.
- If your client is facing a surprise inspection by the CMA (a dawn raid), review the applicable search warrant as soon as possible.
- Investigate a CMA Case: Prepare a response strategy in the event that the CMA is suspected of copying privileged information.
- Substantiate Privilege: Make a list of all conceivable privilege claims that the client might have.
- Bonus Task: Elevator pitch After your last day of the vacation scheme at Ashurst, make a positive first impression by confidently engaging with your supervising Partner.
