The first issue of what was to become the Duke Law Journal was published in March 1951 as the Duke Bar Journal. Created to provide a medium for student expression, the Duke Bar Journal consisted entirely of student-written and student-edited work until 1953, when it began publishing faculty contributions.
To reflect the inclusion of faculty scholarship, the Duke Bar Journal became the Duke Law Journal in 1957. In 1969, the Journal published its inaugural Administrative Law Symposium issue, a tradition that continues today.

Submission Rules
- Manuscripts should conform to The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (21st ed. 2020).
- Authors are encouraged to also conform to the Chicago Manual of Style (17th ed. 2017).
- Accordingly, DLJ has a strong preference for Articles of fewer than 35,000 words (or roughly 70 law review pages), including footnotes; longer articles will only be published in exceptional circumstances. Shorter essays are welcomed.
Submission Procedure
- Manuscripts can be submitted through Scholastica or directly to the Duke Law Journal via email during submission periods.
- Submission periods typically take place from February-March and July-August.
- Manuscripts submitted directly to the Duke Law Journal should be accompanied by a cover letter including the author’s name, address, telephone number, electronic mail address, and the title of the manuscript.
- For Duke Law Journal Online Submissions, please email all manuscripts to dlj@law.duke.edu. Submissions do not need to be anonymized.
