Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram at University of Kerala is one of the institutions imparting graduate and post graduate legal education in India. It is the second law college in Kerala and one of the oldest law colleges in the country.

About the Seminar

The incidence of domestic violence and dowry deaths shakes the conscience of society. It is against the commitments of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees equal rights and protection for all genders. However, gender roles being
the same in our domestic ecosystem the major section of our society are still controlled by patriarchy. The attitude of viewing a girl as a commodity and burden is a fundamental practice in such a society. The social evil of dowry persists despite awareness and social progress. This is the major cause of domestic violence too. Dowry is still considered as a status symbol and to flaunt ones wealth. This will make the grooms and their families believe it as their right. Domestic violence is not a one-time issue. It is a repeated pattern of behaviours aggregating over time. Its ubiquity was highlighted prominently during the COVID-19 lockdown where when the world went into lockdown, another pandemic was brewing – that of domestic violence and has been on the rise ever since. In India, The National Commission for Women (NCW) received the highest number of complaints in the last six years in 2020, regarding crimes committed against women.

This webinar intends to explore the response of state agencies and the challenges faced and strategies used by civil society organizations, which, for years, have been active in working at ensuring survivors’ access to support services. It also evaluates impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on domestic violence against women, the shifts in forms and intensity of this violence, and women’s responses.

The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram by this webinar expects dialogues not just on the theoretical aspects of women rights or women empowerment; instead, we are looking forward to answers to the often moot questions like where lies the real issue? Do we need more laws to protect women in the domestic environment? What are the practical solutions in this race against the pandemic that appears to have no medicine at all?

IQAC is proposing this 2-Day National Webinar on 15th and 16th July 2021.
