About the Centre 

The National Law University Odisha being established by an Act of Odisha Legislature has undertaken the obligation to produce quality research on the issues relevant to the government of State. The Centre of Tribal Studies at National Law University Odisha is an initiative towards this goal. It has been established as a Centre for producing quality research and analysis in the domain of tribal affairs and its legal, social, economic and cultural dimensions to provide sustainable solutions.

The centre for tribal studies, National Law University is calling for research papers for an edited book to be published by Eastern Book Company Lucknow. The deadline for submission of the paper is April 30, 2020.

About the Book

The Centre in furtherance of its objectives intends to bring out an edited volume on Tribal Justice. The volume proposes to critically examine various tribal welfare policies, legislations and judgments from legal, social, economic and cultural dimensions. The object is to bring out a comprehensive study which may enable government, civil servants, activists, and other stakeholders to examine and evaluate the available options to implement the goals of tribal welfare laws. Therefore, we cordially invite quality research papers in law and related disciplines to “Tribal Justice” for an edited Book to be published by Eastern Book Company, Lucknow.

Themes

Contributors can submit in the areas broadly based on the following themes:

  1. International Legal Regime for recognition of aborigines, indigenous people and tribal traditions.
  2. Indian Constitutional Regime for the protection of tribes, Federalism and Tribal Governance and the Role and Functioning of National Commission for Scheduled Tribes
  3. Preservation and Protection of Tribal Traditions and Cultural Expressions of Tribes under the Indian Constitution and other Laws.
  4. The Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and Administration of Justice to Schedule Tribe in Naxalite–Maoist insurgency areas referred to as Red Corridor.
  5. Forest Rights Act, Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act and other such property rights related initiatives and its impact on tribal welfare.
  6. Development induced displacement and challenges of rehabilitation and resettlement, especially in the Red Corridor Belt.
  7. Climate change and cultural identity of tribal people.
  8. Tribal Livelihood and tradition Post-Emergence of the Red Corridor
  9. Tribal Employment, Empowerment, Skill Development, Education, Health.
  10. Exploring an Alternative Tribal Governance in India.

Note: The above sub-themes are only illustrative. The Centre for Tribal Studies, NLUO would welcome papers on other topics related to tribal justice.

Submission Guidelines

  • Contributions should be between 8,000-10,000 words. The word limit mentioned is inclusive of footnotes. Kindly note that the word limit will be strictly enforced.
  • All the submissions must consist of an Abstract of not more than 250 words, the main contribution and a declaration of originality. The abstract will not be included in the word limit.
  • A submission can be co-authored by a maximum of two people.

Format and Citation Guidelines

  • Font Type and Size of the main text must be Times New Roman, 12.
  • Font Type and Size of footnotes must be Times New Roman, 10.
  • Line Spacing of the main text and footnotes must be 1.5, Single respectively.
  • Use of headings and Sub-Headings is encouraged. Headings and Sub-Headings should be numbered, should be of the same font type and size as the main text and should be in bold.
  • Citations must be in OSCOLA format.

Submission Procedure

  • Authors are requested to send their original, unpublished submissions in .doc/.docx format to cts@nluo.ac.in.
  • The name of the file must contain Name of the Author(s) + Title of the Submission.

The submissions must be accompanied by a covering letter bearing the following information:

  • Full Name of the Author(s)
  • Position/Year of Study
  • Institutional Affiliations (if any)
  • Contact Details of the Author(s)

Publication Policy

  • The submissions should be original work of the authors and must not be published elsewhere. Submissions with plagiarized content and copyright issues will be rejected outrightly.
  • By sending the submissions to NLUO, the author(s) agree to assign exclusive copyright in the work to University. It shall be entitled to, without limitation, publish and reproduce the submission (or part(s) thereof) in any manner it sees fit (with due acknowledgement to the author) subject to the doctrine of fair use as enumerated under the Copyright Act.
  • The editors reserve the right to edit the submissions (or part(s) thereof) for publication without permission from or further notice to the author.
  • After initial screening, short-listed submissions will go through a double-blind peer-review process and the final selection will be based on that procedure.
