The Justice V. R. Krishna Iyer Chair on Human Rights at the School of Legal Studies, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kerala, is pleased to introduce the first edition of the Justice V. R. Krishna Iyer Memorial National Article Writing Competition on Human Rights, 2024. This esteemed competition welcomes submissions from LLB and LLM students, offering them an opportunity to showcase their talent and insights on human rights issues.

About Justice V. R. Krishna Iyer Chair on Human Rights:

The Chair, established in memory of the Late Justice V. R. Krishna Iyer, former judge of the Supreme Court of India and a prominent advocate for Human Rights renowned for his influential legal decisions, is dedicated to advancing the human rights centered legal principles developed by him. Its principal objective is to foster awareness about human rights, particularly among students and educators, and to instil a compassionate approach across all spheres of life. Through a variety of impactful outreach initiatives, workshops, and seminars, this Chair endeavours to address topics such as healthcare, patients’ rights, privacy rights, socio-economic rights, and other rights.

This prestigious competition provides a platform for LLB and LLM students to delve into critical issues surrounding human rights and express their perspectives through thoughtful and insightful articles. The participants can delve into pertinent human rights issues and articulate their perspectives through meticulously crafted articles. By commemorating the legacy of Justice V. R. Krishna Iyer, a luminary in the domain of human rights advocacy, the competition aims to imbue the next generation of legal practitioners with a steadfast commitment to

principles of justice, liberty, equality, and empathy within society. Participants are encouraged to explore legal doctrines, contemporary challenges, and innovative approaches, thereby fostering a nuanced discourse towards the modernization of the human rights law framework in India.

What Are The Details Of The Competition?

  • Eligibility:
  • All students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in law (both three-year L.L.B. course & five-year L.L.B. course) and LL.M from any law college/school/university in India are eligible to participate in this competition.
  • Themes:
  • Modernization of Human Rights Law Framework in India
  • Application of International Human Rights in India
  • Enumerated and Un-enumerated Human Rights in India
  • Enforcement of Human Rights in India: Issues and Challenges
  • Role of Judiciary and Human Rights Institutions
  • Submission Guidelines:
  • No Co-authorship is allowed
  • One author can submit only one entry
  • All submissions must have an appropriate article title which is different from the theme.
  • The maximum word limit of the article must be 3500 – 4500 words, excluding footnotes.
  • The Article should contain an abstract of 250 words with Five Keywords
  • Font and size: Times New Roman, size 12 (for main text). Times New Roman, size 10 (for footnotes).
  • Size and alignment: A4 size, with 2.54 cm margin (normal margin).
  • All headings must follow the format of first letter caps (e.g. History of Human Rights in India)
  • All text should be justified.
  • The paper must be accompanied by a cover page containing details such as the Title of the Paper, Theme of the Paper, Name of the Author, University/ Institution/Organization, Email Address and Mobile Number.
  • Footnoting: OSCOLA 4th Edition
  • All articles must be original and unpublished work of the author(s) and should not have been submitted for publication/published elsewhere in any form.
  • All articles must be plagiarism-free; however, similarity up to 15% with proper footnoting and AI content up to 5% is allowed.
  • Submissions which does not adhere to the guidelines will be summarily rejected
  • Important Dates:
  • Deadline for submission of Articles: 25th May 2024
  • Announcement of Results: 20th June 2024
  • Prizes:
  • First Prize: Rs. 10000 + Medal + Certificate
  • Second Price: Rs. 5000 + Medal + Certificate
  • Third Prize: Rs. 2500 + Medal + Certificate
  • The winners of the first, second and third prizes are also entitled to join as Research Interns for six months (Online) at Justice V. R. Krishna Iyer Chair under the guidance of Chair Professor, Justice (Rtd.) K. M. Joseph, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India.
  • Authors of the top 15 articles will also be offered a Research Intern position for two months (Online) at Justice V. R. Krishna Iyer Chair under the guidance of Chair Professor, Justice (Rtd.) K. M. Joseph, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India.
  • All the selected entries will be published as Chapters in an ISBN-numbered edited book.
