Com. Binoy Viswam is the Secretary of the Communist Party of India’s National Council and represents Kerala in the Rajya Sabha. He serves on the Parliament’s Standing Committees on Science and Technology, Environment, Forests, and Climate Change.

The internship gives you a unique perspective on public policy and lawmaking from the perspective of a lawmaker. The intern’s principal responsibility would be to assist the MP with comprehensive research for his numerous projects, as well as to compose parliamentary questions for the MP, prepare speeches for zero hour debates, raise matters of public concern, draught private members’ bills, and so on.

In addition, the internship allows you to interact with prominent specialists in a variety of sectors about key public policy and development challenges.

Roles to cater

  • Legislation: Drafting brief notes/amendments to newly introduced legislation, as well as producing private member bills.
  • Questions: preparing questions that can be asked of several Ministries, as well as ensuring that the questions are followed up on.
  • Preparing Notices: Prepare notices on topics that the MP may bring up.
  • Letters/Calls to Action: The MP receives a large number of letters from citizens on a variety of problems; part of your job will be to draught responses and keep track of these letters.
  • Research and advocacy on important public issues.
  • Any other work that you may be given.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Individuals who are proactive and interested in the subject of law and public policy are needed for the job. Applicants must meet the following requirements:
  • Reading and writing skills in English are required. Candidates who can communicate in Malayalam will be given priority.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in any academic subject is required of the candidate.
  • Parliament, politics, and the government’s operation piqued his curiosity.
  • Experience in academic or policy research.

  • A 500-word statement of purpose describing why you are interested in this internship.
  • Any publications/newspaper opinion pieces/blog posts/research document/etc. as a writing/research sample — Please do not create a new one if you do not already have one.
  • Anything else you’d like to show off that demonstrates your commitment to political activism or that you think is worth discussing.

The deadline for applications is January 15, 2022. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to participate in additional rounds of assessment and interview between January 22nd and January 26th, 2022. Only those who have been chosen for the interview rounds will be notified.

  • Each intern will receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 5000/- for this internship.
