Insightful session for law students on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space -NUJS, Centre for Aviation and Space Laws-Oct 6

The Centre for Aviation and Space Laws was founded by Prof. (Dr.) Sandeepa Bhat and Dr. Shouvik Kumar Guha to investigate, comprehend, analyse, and critique legal advances and needs in the field of aviation and space law.

RELEVANT PERSONALITIES

Prof. (Dr.) Sandeepa Bhat is working as a Professor of Law and Director of Centre for Aviation and Space Laws at NUJS Kolkata. He has the distinction of being the member of the American Society of International Law, Baltimore, USA, International Academy of Space Law, Moscow, Russia, and the International Institute of Space Law, Paris, France. Dr. Bhat has published three books on Space Law and three books on Medical Law. In addition, he has published more than fifty articles in the journals of international and national repute. He has presented over hundred and ten research papers in the international and national conferences. He also has the distinction of being a member of Indian Space Research Organization’s Expert Advisory Group for drafting the National Space Act for India.

Bruce K. Gagnon was a founding member of the Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space when it was created in 1992. He has served as coordinator of the organization since its creation. He began working on space issues in 1982 during the Ronald Reagan administration (who first proposed Star Wars). He is a Vietnam-era veteran of the US Air Force and began his career as a professional organizer with the United Farm Workers Union in Florida organizing fruit pickers. He lives in Bath, Maine along the northeast Atlantic coast in the United States.

Prof. Dave Webb is the Convener of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space. He is a retired university engineering professor who switched to Peace and Conflict Studies. He was also co-founder and Director of the Praxis Centre (for the study of Information and Technology for Peace, Conflict Resolution and Human Rights) at Leeds Beckett (previously Leeds Metropolitan) University. He retired from there in 2012 to focus on peace campaigning. He is also currently chair of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) in the UK, a Vice-President of the International Peace Bureau and a patron of the UK group Scientists for Global Responsibility.

Dr. Aruna Kammila is an Associate Professor with a demonstrated history of working in the legal
services industry. Skilled in cyber laws, public international law, international criminal law, maritime
law and space law. She is one of the board of advisors at Global Network Against Weapons and
Nuclear Power in Space.

Prof. Subrata Ghoshroy is a Research Affiliate with the Program in Science, Technology, and Society at
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. He is also a Visiting Professor at the Tokyo Institute
of Technology, Tokyo. He spent two decades as an engineer in defense research before transitioning
to the policy world in 1996 after receiving an IEEE Congressional Fellowship. He later became a
professional staff member of the US Congress and following that, a Senior Defense Analyst at the US
Government Accountability Office (GAO), the investigative arm of Congress. His research includes
military funding of research, nuclear weapons, nuclear disarmament, missile defense, and space
weapons. He is the Co-Chair of the International Network of Engineers and Scientists for Global
Responsibility (INES), which is based in Berlin, Germany.

Eligibility

Participation is expected from a large number of legislators, business leaders, academics, and students to participate in analysing the worldwide influence on national civil aviation businesses in each jurisdiction.
