NATIONAL LAW UNIVERSITY, DELHI CENTRE ON THE DEATH PENALTY RESEARCH ASSOCIATES (LITIGATION) – CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Position:

The National Law University, Delhi (‘University’) is seeking to engage, on a contractual basis, one Research Associate (Litigation) who will work full time in the capacity of a Consultant for the Centre on the Death Penalty at its campus in Dwarka, New Delhi. The contract will be for one year initially and can be extended by another year at the discretion of the University.

About the Centre on the Death Penalty:

The Centre was set up in August 2014 and undertakes litigation, research and outreach relating to the death penalty. The Centre was formed following the Death Penalty Research Project (‘the Project’) undertaken by the University since July 2013 in collaboration with the National Legal Services Authority (for more details, visit www.deathpenaltyindia.com). The Centre provides pro bono legal assistance to several prisoners sentenced to death across the country

Currently, the Centre has 12 full-time Research Associates in litigation, research and public affairs roles in addition to three administrative staff and the Director of the Centre.

Responsibilities:

A. Devise legal strategy and arguments for cases handled by the Centre and carry out related research.

B. Draft criminal appeals, review petitions, writ petitions, applications, rejoinders and other legal documents.

C. Brief and assist advocates on record and senior counsels.

D. Visit prisons across India to conduct detailed interviews with prisoners sentenced to death, their families as part of developing legal strategy in particular cases.

E. Regularly communicate with prison authorities to obtain case specific information and documents.

F. Collect case records maintained by prisons, previous lawyers, family members or court record rooms.

G. Present the work of the Centre at appropriate fora.

H. Organise training workshops and conferences.

I. Any other work that may be necessary to further the aims of the Centre.

Qualifications:

A. Graduate with an LLB degree.

B. Enrolment with any State Bar Council.

C. Those with full-time litigation experience of two years or more will be given preference.

D. Ability to read/ write/ speak regional Indian languages will be an advantage but is not mandatory.

Compensation:

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be within the range of Rs. 50,000-Rs.60,000/- per month.

The cover letter must state (Attn: Director, Centre on the Death Penalty.) The University reserves the right to conduct interviews and not fill these positions. The University will be unable to cover the costs for attending the interview but the possibility of a telephonic/video interview can be explored.

Applications must reach us no later than 7th September 2016. Interviews for shortlisted candidates may be conducted around 10th or 11th September, 2016

1. The Centre works on behalf of all prisoners sentenced to death, regardless of the offence involved.
