GIBS is affiliated to Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi and is approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Ministry of HRD, Government of India for technical programmes and Bar Council of India for Law programmes.

About the Competition

Gitarattan International Business School (GIBS) is organising the 2nd National Inter College Debate Competition.

THEME : “INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS
ARE PARAMOUNT TO ABSOLUTE
STATE SOVEREIGNTY”

‘Sovereignty’ is deeply embedded in international legal regime and ensures order, stability and predictability in international relations. This holds true for both customary international law as well as treaty-based international law, which are nothing but amanifestation of state sovereignty.

The judgment of the International Court of Justice, in the case concerning Kulbhushan Jadhav, held in Pakistan on charges of “terrorism and espionage” has raised debates over the conflict between rights of a nation-state to prosecute an individual posing as a threat to its national security vs. the human rights obligations undertaken by it.

The court, in this case, has only directed Pakistan to grant consular access to him and has asked it to ‘review
and reconsider the conviction and sentence’, without ordering his release.

In this debate, an attempt would, thus, be made to deliberate upon the contentious legal issue of the conflict between two of the above discussed international issues of contemporary legal significance, i.e. Human Rights and State Sovereignty, in the context of the latest ICJ ruling pertaining to Kulbhushan Jadhav.

Submission Details

Students pursuing any law course of 3 years or 5 years duration from any University/Institute/College approved by Bar Council of India are eligible to take part in this event.

Both the team members must belong to the same University/Institute/College.
