About the seminar

Government Law College Thiruvananthapuram is organizing a three-day National Seminar on the topic ‘Reproductive Rights of Women: Issues and Concerns’ from 9th to 11th March 2021.

Overview

Reproductive rights are legal rights and freedoms relating to reproduction and reproductive health. Reproductive rights are an essential element for the enjoyment of women’s rights, without which they cannot enjoy full equality. Women should have the ability to control decisions pertaining to their reproductive health as it is necessary to control their own destiny. Personal autonomy in matters of reproduction and reproductive rights is very important in an open society.

However, there are instances where women do not have the right to make decisions affecting their reproductive health. Instead, some others decide whether and when a woman should or should not have children. She has no control over the path her life will take. Everyone except the woman herself is able to decide what is in her best interest. She either is too young, incompetent, or too poor to decide whether to end a pregnancy or have a child.

Women can control their reproductive destiny only when reproductive rights are acknowledged as human rights. Hence it is essential to protect and defend reproductive rights. Without reproductive rights, women will never experience the basic right to life, liberty, and freedom. The right to choose reproductive rights is also important to women’s socioeconomic well-being and overall health.

In this backdrop, Government Law college Thiruvananthapuram is organizing a three-day National Seminar on the topic ‘Reproductive Rights of Women: Issues and Concerns’ from 9th to 11th March 2021.
